{"id":1307,"date":"2019-11-12T18:12:47","date_gmt":"2019-11-12T18:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=1307"},"modified":"2019-11-12T18:12:55","modified_gmt":"2019-11-12T18:12:55","slug":"appeal-court-upholds-sanwo-olus-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=1307","title":{"rendered":"APPEAL COURT UPHOLDS SANWO-OLU\u2019s ELECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Court of Appeal in Lagos on Saturday dismissed an\nappeal filed by the Labor Party challenging the judgment of the Governorship\nElection Petition Tribunal which affirmed the election of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu\nas the Governor of Lagos State.<br>\n<br>\nAccording to a statement by the governor\u2019s Chief Press Secretary, Mr\nGboyega Akosile, the appeal court, in a unanimous decision, held that the\nappeal lodged by Labour Party lacked merit.<br>\n<br>\nRecall that the Labor Party and its governorship candidate, Mr\nIfagbemi Awamaridi, had appealed the judgment of Election Petition Tribunal\ndelivered on September 23, 2019, insisting that Governor Sanwo-Olu was not\nqualified to contest the election held in March 2019 and that the governor did\nnot win the election.<br>\n<br>\nRespondents were the Independent National Electoral Commission,\nSanwo-Olu, All Progressives Congress, INEC Residential Electoral Commissioner,\nthe Returning Officer for the Lagos State Governorship Election, the State\u2019s Commissioner\nof Police and the Nigerian Army.<br>\n<br>\n<br>\nJustice Hannatu Sankey, who read the lead judgement of the five-man\npanel of Justices of Appeal Court, specifically affirmed the decisions reached\nby the tribunal.<br>\n<br>\nAccording to the Court, the appellant (Labour Party) failed to produce\nany oral or documentary evidence through witnesses and other channels to\nestablish the fact that Governor Sanwo-Olu was not qualified to contest the\nelection and did not win the governorship election.<br>\n<br>\nThe Court further ruled that the petitioner went on a \u201cColumbian\nJourney of making assertions with nothing to back it up,\u201d and thereby dismissed\nthe appeal in its entirety.<br>\n<br>\n<br>\nThe Appellate Court also upheld the Tribunal\u2019s decision that no proof\nof allegation of collusion and assault against officers of the Nigerian Army\nwas provided by the appellants, adding that no sufficient fact was provided to\nsubstantiate allegation of electoral malpractices at the polling units against\nthe respondents.<br>\n<br>\n\u201cThe appeal is lacking in merit and is hereby dismissed.
