{"id":13105,"date":"2020-05-13T08:53:10","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T08:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=13105"},"modified":"2020-05-13T08:53:18","modified_gmt":"2020-05-13T08:53:18","slug":"nigeria-other-african-countries-face-200bn-revenue-loss-in-2020-imf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=13105","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria, other African countries face $200bn revenue loss in 2020 \u2013IMF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMF-Boss-Kristalina-Georgieva.jpg\" alt=\"IMF says Nigeria, others raised global debt to $188tn\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a strong likelihood that Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries will lose around $200 billion in income to the current global economic and public health crisis by the end of this year, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/IMF\">International Monetary Fund (IMF)<\/a>&nbsp;said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Papa N\u2019Diaye, Head of Regional Studies Division in IMF\u2019s African Unit, stated that the impact of the coronavirus outbreak could set the region on a retrogressive course by wiping out all the developmental efforts it had made in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economies of sub-Saharan African countries are envisaged to shrink by a record 1.6% in 2020 according to an earlier estimate of the IMF Regional Economic Outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Ndiaye observed that countries in the region could witness income losses totalling $200 billion compared to what they were expecting six months ago, adding that they recording significant advancement before the pandemic set in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting incomes to be four per cent below what they were six months ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMF official cited improvement in life expectancy and per capita income among the indicators of socio-economic progress in sub-Saharan Africa before COVID-19 reared its ugly head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa\u2019s economic prosperity was set to be consolidated by the execution of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCTA), beginning from this July before the virus stood on its way, a development which he said he hoped would be temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFailing to contain the outbreak will stretch weak health systems and lead to catastrophic economic, health and humanitarian consequences,\u201d Ndiaye said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The region\u2019s biggest oil producers \u2013 Nigeria and Angola \u2013 would record larger losses in his view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe drop in oil prices is hitting the oil-exporting countries like Nigeria and Angola.
