{"id":13844,"date":"2020-05-20T07:19:33","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T07:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=13844"},"modified":"2020-05-20T07:19:40","modified_gmt":"2020-05-20T07:19:40","slug":"why-many-rich-nigerians-died-from-covid-19-health-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=13844","title":{"rendered":"Why many rich Nigerians died from COVID-19 \u2013 Health Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/media.premiumtimesng.com\/wp-content\/files\/2020\/05\/Osagie-Emmanuel-Ehanire-e1589798815162.jpg?fit=800%2C472&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, at a press briefing on the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has said educated and \u2018well-to-do\u2019 Nigerians constitute many of the fatalities from COVID-19 in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Ehanire while speaking at the daily Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Tuesday said many of the patients chose home treatment and reported late to care centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA disturbing picture emerging from statistics is that not only are most fatalities observed to be linked with preexisting diseases, many are educated, well-to-do people, who chose home-based care, where they develop sudden complication and have to be rushed to hospital,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s first COVID-19 death was Suleiman Achimugu, a former Managing Director of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the victim had underlying medical conditions \u2013 multiple myeloma and diabetes \u2013 and was undergoing chemotherapy before returning to Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Health Organisation (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">WHO<\/a><\/strong>) patients with diabetes may be at extra risk for COVID-19 mortality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/388499-abba-kyari-buharis-chief-of-staff-is-dead.html\">Abba Kyari<\/a><\/strong>, also died from the virus which is ravaging the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Tuesday night, a total of 192 patients have died out of Nigeria\u2019s 6,401 confirmed cases of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnostic commodities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Ehanire said the government will continue to provide diagnostic commodities when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>He also urge the public to quickly seek medical attention when the need arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExperience has continued to show that breathing complication in COVID-19 patients cauterises with little or no notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an added reason why all persons should seek medical attention when they test positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will also continue to provide diagnostic commodities and facilities in collaboration with partners,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporting high cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, at the briefing, the Director-General of NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said reporting more or less COVID-19 cases does not attract support from the federal government to states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been unconfirmed reports of some states distorting the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in order to attract financial support from the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Ihekweazu however, said there are no benefits to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether you report more or less, there is no direct relationship between the number of cases and how much support you get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, I don\u2019t see the benefit of either reporting more or reporting less,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has said educated and \u2018well-to-do\u2019 Nigerians constitute many of the fatalities from COVID-19 in Nigeria.
