{"id":14649,"date":"2020-05-22T08:59:28","date_gmt":"2020-05-22T08:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=14649"},"modified":"2020-05-22T08:59:36","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T08:59:36","slug":"covid-19-forces-lagos-govt-to-reduce-2020-budget-by-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=14649","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 forces Lagos govt to reduce 2020 budget by 21%"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Babajide-Sanwo-Olu1.jpg\" alt=\"COVID-19: Relief for Lagos, Ogun, Abuja residents as govt relaxes lockdown measures\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/lagos-state-rewards-tech-initiative-in-continued-romance-with-enthusiasts\/\">Lagos State<\/a>&nbsp;government on Thursday approved the reduction of the state\u2019s 2020 Budget by 21 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Sam Egube, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Lagos, said the decision was aimed at mitigating the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the budget has been reduced from N1.168 trillion to N920.5 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lagos House of Assembly had earlier this year passed N1.168 trillion as the 2020 Appropriation Bill for the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approved budget comprised of N457 billion recurrent expenditure and capital expenditure of N711 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commissioner listed some of the factors that necessitated the review of the 2020 Budget to include: fall in crude oil prices with deleterious effects on statutory allocation expectations, downward pressure of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and devaluation of the Naira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that reduced public and private investment, increased&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/nigerias-inflation-ja-rate-climbs-to-near-two-year-high-of-12-20\/\">inflation<\/a>, the decline in demand for goods and services and reduction in manufacturing activities led to increased unemployment and lower Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The&nbsp;Lagos State&nbsp;government on Thursday approved the reduction of the state\u2019s 2020 Budget by 21 percent.
