{"id":16888,"date":"2020-05-29T13:27:47","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T13:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=16888"},"modified":"2020-05-29T13:27:53","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T13:27:53","slug":"nlc-wants-govt-to-scrap-security-votes-stop-taking-loans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=16888","title":{"rendered":"NLC wants govt to scrap security votes, stop taking loans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ayuba-Wabba1-1.jpg\" alt=\"NLC vows to ensure new minimum wage is implemented\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/dont-stop-or-deduct-workers-salaries-over-covid-19-nlc-charges-govt\/\">Nigeria Labour Congress<\/a>&nbsp;has called for the scrapping of security votes by the executive arm of government from the budgeting system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, the labour union said, will help to avert abuses in line with the reality of the COVID-19 financial constraints on the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NLC made the call in a communique on Thursday, adding that the congress demanded an \u201cimmediate stop to the practice of borrowing\u201d and foreign loans except \u201ctied exclusively to capital projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The communique was issued in Abuja after Labour-Civil Situation Room on COVID-19 by NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, and General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, as well as the Country Director, Action Aid, Ene Obi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NLC said: \u201cThe Labour-Civil Society Situation Room on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/COVID-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0unequivocally condemns and rejects the arbitrary deduction in the salaries and pension of workers and pensioners, respectively, by the Kaduna State Government and other states. We throw our weight behind the ultimatum by our workers in the affected states for a reversal of the unjust decision. We fully stand by workers\u2019 resolve to embark on a strike if their demands are not met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven the abuse of security votes by many political office holders in the executive branch of government, we call for the scrapping of security votes from public budgeting in Nigeria. Security votes should be appropriated and accounted for like every other budget item. We call on political office holders to reduce their salaries and allowances in order to free up finances for other areas of national developmental needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also call for an end to medical and education tourism for elected public officials and their families. We call for an immediate stop to the practice of borrowing to finance consumption.
