{"id":17557,"date":"2020-06-02T08:00:34","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T08:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=17557"},"modified":"2020-06-02T08:00:40","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T08:00:40","slug":"covid-19-plateau-chief-judge-releases-50-awaiting-trial-inmates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=17557","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19: Plateau Chief Judge releases 50 awaiting-trial inmates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Justice-Yakubu-Dakwak.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chief Judge of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/plateau-state-police-arrests-ak-47-bearing-herdsman\/\">Plateau State<\/a>, Justice Yakubu Dakwak, on Monday, discharged 50 awaiting-trial inmates who had been in custody at the Jos Correctional Centre over different minor offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakwak said the release of the detainees was in line with the Federal Government\u2019s decision to decongest the custodial centres in the country in a bid to check the spread of COVID-19 in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chief judge, however, said those standing trial for alleged violent offences like murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and rape did not benefit from the reprieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discharged inmates are those arraigned for theft, breach of trust and inciting public disturbance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspects had been on remand for many months with some spending over a year in jail without going on trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chief judge told the inmates that they were discharged of the offences but not acquitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI want to tell all of you that you have been discharged but not acquitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you go out there and commit another crime, you will come back here and we will reopen this case and still try you for the new one you committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe expect you to be of good behaviour and take this as a chance to turn a new leaf and shun&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/the-war-in-yemen-is-a-crime-against-humanity-and-islam\/\">crime<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakwak said the exercise would continue quarterly in all the state\u2019s correctional centres to help decongest the facilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chief Judge of&nbsp;Plateau State, Justice Yakubu Dakwak, on Monday, discharged 50 awaiting-trial inmates who had been in custody at the Jos Correctional Centre over different minor offences.
