{"id":17761,"date":"2020-06-02T09:47:19","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T09:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=17761"},"modified":"2020-06-02T09:47:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T09:47:28","slug":"naira-strengthens-against-dollar-at-parallel-market-now-n440-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=17761","title":{"rendered":"Naira strengthens against dollar at parallel market, now N440\/$1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dollars-and-naira.jpg\" alt=\"FOREX: CBN injects N273m into retail secondary market\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s currency, the Naira advanced 2.2% against the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/dollar\">American dollar<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday at the black market segment of the currency market, exchanging at N440 for the hard currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the previous session on Friday, the U.S. dollar had traded higher at N450.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Monday gain marked the first major appreciation of the local currency against the dollar at the parallel market since late March, boosted by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/cbn-to-resume-forex-sales-as-lockdown-eases\/\">resumption of foreign exchange sale<\/a>&nbsp;by the central bank to Bureaux De Change and banks across the country after days of operational disruption induced by the coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, had lately warned currency speculators against practices threatening the stability of the foreign exchange market and dissuaded customers from having transactions with street currency traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weeks back, the apex bank recommenced the sale of up to $100 million on a weekly basis to individuals and businesses wanting to make payment for transactions abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u202fbelieve some of the recent pressures on FX\u202fis driven\u202fby speculators\u2019 panic responses to weakness in dollar earnings, the decline in FX inflow through the I&amp;E window, and suspension of dollar sales to BDCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe imminent resumption\u202fof BDC\u202factivities is therefore likely to slightly ease naira pressures in the\u202fparallel\u202fmarkets, but we believe the underlying\u202fmedium-term\u202ffundamental concerns facing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/naira\/\">naira<\/a>&nbsp;still remain,\u201d said Phillip Anegbe, Team Lead, CardinalStone Research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s currency, the Naira advanced 2.2% against the&nbsp;American dollar&nbsp;on Monday at the black market segment of the currency market, exchanging at N440 for the hard currency.
