{"id":18287,"date":"2020-06-03T10:25:13","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T10:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=18287"},"modified":"2020-06-03T10:25:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T10:25:20","slug":"court-discharges-melaye-of-criminal-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=18287","title":{"rendered":"Court discharges Melaye of criminal charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Dino-Melaye-house.jpg\" alt=\"Police begins investigation into Melaye\u2019s \u2018kidnap\u2019\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Senator&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/melaye-to-nigerian-leaders-time-to-listen-to-the-poor-oppressed-or-risk-violent-revolution\/\">Dino Melaye<\/a>&nbsp;has defeated the Nigerian government in the alleged criminal offence charges leveled against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami levelled the criminal charges against the former Kogi West senator before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT), High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AGF accused Melaye of deliberately making false claim that the ex-chief of staff to the Kogi State Governor, now Deputy Governor, David Onoja plottied to assassinate him in April 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former senator was equally accused of making a false statement during a conversation with Mohammed Abubakar, son of Abubakar Audu, ex-Kogi governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a two-count charge, the government accused Melaye of giving out false information with the intent to harm Onoja\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The offense if proven is punishable under Sections 140 and 393 of the Penal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Melaye denied the allegations levelled against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His lawyer, Olusegun Jolaawo (SAN), after the prosecution closed their case filed a no-case-submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sitting on the matter on Tuesday, the court discharged Melaye and cleared him of giving false information to police, as claimed by the AGF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>READ ALSO: Senate approves Buhari\u2019s $5.513bn external loan request<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice Olasumbo Goodluck, the presiding judge, in his ruling on Melaye\u2019s no-case -submission, ruled that \u201cthere was no evidence that the defendant gave false information to any person in public service.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senator&nbsp;Dino Melaye&nbsp;has defeated the Nigerian government in the alleged criminal offence charges leveled against him.
