Mr. Thompson Hope,\nChief Town Planning Officer, FCT Department of Development Control, disclosed\nthis while briefing newsmen shortly after inspecting the illegal structures on\nWednesday in Abuja. Hope said that the department had earlier issued seven\ndays\u2019 ultimatum to the inhabitants of the affected illegal structures in the\narea, adding that as soon as the ultimatum expire on Monday Nov. 25, demolition\nwould begin immediately. <br>\n<br>\nHe said\nthat the development control had marked some of the illegal structures for\ndemolition as far back as two, three years ago. He also said that the\ndepartment had carried out several sensitize campaign to the indigenous\ncommunities for many years but they refused to abide by the FCTA regulations on\nland allocation. According to him, the indigenous communities and villages has\nexpanded beyond the indigenous settlement and most of this expansion and\nillegal structures, the areas are being sold by the indigenous communities\nthemselves. <br>\n<br>\nHe said\nthat the department held several meetings with the leaders of the indigenous\ncommunities on the need for them to stop selling plots of land to the people.\n\u201cWe have severally warned the indigenous communities including the local chiefs\nthat all the lands in FCT is vested within the confine of the FCT Minister and\nthat they should desist from selling land. \u201cBut because some people are so\ndesperate and desirous to build thinking that before government takes action\nthey will either make one or two profits out of it. <br>\n<br>\n\u201cThis\nillegal structures are already build on service corridors where plot allotted\nare desirous to develop their properties but because of this illegal\ndevelopment along the corridor they cannot take possession of their plots.\n\u201cRecently, the FCTA has sent signals to plot allottees to take possession of\ntheir plots else they stand a chance of been revoke and that has put us under\nenormous pressure as a department.\u201d By our estimate, we have about 140 illegal\nstructures on this corridor. <br>\n<br>\nWe have\ngiven them 7 days\u2019 ultimatum and hopefully by the expiration of the ultimatum,\nwe are coming to demolish all the illegal structures.\u201d The notice was given to\nthem on Monday Nov. 18 and it will expire by Monday Nov. 2.\u201d Hopefully on\nTuesday, we will come with our machines to demolish them,\u201d he said. On the\nissue of compensation to the owners of the illegal structures, Hope said\ncompensation was a policy issue that can only be handled by the Minister.
