A Black Lives Matter protester has tested positive for COVID-19 in Australia<\/a> despite wearing a face mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protester was said to have started showing symptoms after attending a 10,000 people\u2019s rally on Saturday in Melbourne, sparking fears of second wave of the virus in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the case could be the start of another outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis realises our worst fears,\u201d he told Sydney radio 2GB. \u201d Now we could slip back into a second wave like other countries have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria\u2019s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said it was unlikely the man contracted the virus at the protest because it was too soon for him to start showing symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis case is unlikely to have been acquired at the protest but we were all concerned about the possibility of transmission occurring at that protest,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It\u2019s obviously helpful that the individual wore a mask but masks are not 100 percent protection.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Sutton, who warned people not to attend Saturday\u2019s rally, also urged people not to gather in groups larger than 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We don\u2019t want people gathering in groups larger than 20 in Victoria because of the risk to others. It is my strong recommendation not to go and it is the law,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the protesters flouted the social distancing directives and punitive measures should be taken against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think they should. I mean, I really do think they should, because they\u2019ll be kind of a double standard here,\u2019 he told Melbourne radio 3AW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think the issues of last weekend were very difficult, but I think people carrying it on now, it\u2019s not about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about people pushing a whole bunch of other barrows now, and it puts others lives and livelihoods at risk.\u201d
