{"id":21374,"date":"2020-06-16T09:15:33","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T09:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=21374"},"modified":"2020-06-16T09:15:40","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T09:15:40","slug":"to-attain-sdgs-nigeria-needs-to-spend-18-of-gdp-on-infrastructure-imf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=21374","title":{"rendered":"To attain SDGs Nigeria needs to spend 18% of GDP on infrastructure \u2013IMF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMF-Managing-Director-Kristalina-Georgieva.jpg\" alt=\"Countries without crude oil better off than Nigeria \u2014IMF\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria needs a minimum infrastructure spending equivalent to 18 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product by 2030 in order to attain Sustainable Development Goals, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/covid-19-imf-approves-3-4bn-emergency-support-loan-for-nigeria\/\">International Monetary Fund (IMF)<\/a>&nbsp;has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multilateral lender made the declaration in its \u201cTechnical Assistance Report \u2013 Additional Spending toward Sustainable Development Goals\u201d for May 2020, which was released on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the IMF, making advancement in the Sustainable Development Goals demands substantial additional resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConcomitant with the reform priorities identified by the United Nations, World Bank, European Union, and other international development institutions, the mission estimates additional spending of 18 percentage points of Gross Domestic Product by 2030\u2014a level higher than the average low-income and developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRelative to other low-income and developing countries, additional spending is higher in education and water and sanitation, and lower in health, electricity, and roads,\u201d the report read in part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It observed that Nigeria was faced with acute development gaps, adding that only half of the student-age population are enrolled in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMF said the healthy life expectancy in the country is 49 years, placing Nigeria among the bottom six countries in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome 54 per cent of the population is connected to an electricity grid that collapses about once a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRoads are in precarious condition. Less than four per cent of the population have access to safely managed water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOverall, Nigeria\u2019s indicators of human and physical capital are worse than countries with lower GDP per capita,\u201d the document stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harnessing the potential of the rapidly expanding population, according to the IMF, requires significant improvements in both human and physical capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Africa\u2019s most populous country and largest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/lagos-economy-suffers-n2-3tn-loss-to-covid-19-pandemic\/\">economy<\/a>, Nigeria is projected by the IMF to grow by around 30 per cent or 60 million people between now and 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo raise living standards, reduce poverty, and provide better opportunities for the growing youth, Nigeria needs to invest more on its people\u2014education and health\u2014and its infrastructure\u2014roads, electricity, and water and sanitation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria needs a minimum infrastructure spending equivalent to 18 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product by 2030 in order to attain Sustainable Development Goals, the&nbsp;International Monetary Fund (IMF)&nbsp;has said.
