China has vowed to take \u201call necessary countermeasures\u201d if the United States imposed legislation penalising banks doing business with Chinese officials who implemented the new national security law on Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning on Friday came after the US Senate unanimously approved the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, sending it to the White House for President Donald Trump\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis US move has grossly interfered in China\u2019s internal affairs and seriously violated international law, as well as the basic norms governing international relations,\u201d the Foreign Affairs Committee of China\u2019s National People\u2019s Congress said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the US side is bent on going down the wrong path,\u00a0China<\/a>\u00a0will resolutely respond with all necessary countermeasures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beijing has faced a groundswell of criticism over its decision to impose a law outlawing \u201cacts of subversion, secession, terrorism and colluding with foreign forces\u201d in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This came after the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States was imposing visa restrictions on Chinese Communist Party officials believed to be responsible for restricting freedoms in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
