{"id":23470,"date":"2020-07-07T14:09:03","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T14:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=23470"},"modified":"2020-07-07T14:09:03","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T14:09:03","slug":"alleged-corruption-treat-magu-fairly-serap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=23470","title":{"rendered":"ALLEGED CORRUPTION: Treat Magu fairly \u2014SERAP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/ibrahim-magu-Ripples.jpg\" alt=\"MAGU: Court order on Diezani is \u2018Mission Impossible\u2019\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the President Muhammadu government to treat the embattled acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday by its deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation expressed concerns about reports that the \u201capparently arbitrary\u201d arrest of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/Magu\/\">Magu<\/a>, may be \u2018the outcome of power-play\u2019 at the \u201chighest levels of government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Magu is reportedly still being detained in police custody on the orders of a presidential panel probing alleged infractions against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to SERAP, a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) reportedly stated that Magu\u2019s arrest may be due to \u201can outcome of power-play by power blocs in the corridors of power that is not really interested in, or in support of, President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s anti-corruption fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The organisation said \u201cThe reported statement by a member of PACAC seems to suggest that Magu\u2019s arrest may be politically motivated and aim to undermine the independence and freedom of action of the EFCC. If true, this would make a mockery of Buhari\u2019s oft-repeated commitment to fight grand corruption and the impunity of perpetrators, which is fuelling widespread and systemic corruption in the country\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SERAP statement read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/SERAP\/\">SERAP<\/a>&nbsp;urges the authorities to afford Magu his constitutionally and internationally guaranteed fair trial rights. Magu must either be charged with a recognizable criminal offence or released immediately and allowed to do his job without fear of reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNigerian authorities cannot continue to keep Magu in detention under suspicious circumstances without bringing any legitimate charges against him in violation of national and international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNigerian authorities must support the independence and freedom of action of anti-corruption agencies and institutions if they are to be able to genuinely fight grand corruption, which has for many years turned public service for many into a kind of criminal enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNigerian authorities should focus on addressing the impact of corruption such as political violence, and denial of access for millions of Nigerians to even the most basic health and education services, as well as other patterns of human rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImproving the independence of anti-corruption agencies and institutions is the most promising way to make tangible progress in the fight against corruption now and in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArticle 9(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Article 6 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights to which Nigeria is a state party guarantee to everyone the right to liberty and security of person, and that no one should be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, Section 35(1) of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 (as amended) guarantees to every person the right to personal liberty and that no person should be arbitrarily deprived of such liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the President Muhammadu government to treat the embattled acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu fairly.
