The government of China has vowed to retaliate after the President of the United States of America; Donald Trump ordered an end to preferential trade treatment for Hong Kong and signed legislation allowing sanctions over Beijing\u2019s enactment of a security law in the semi-autonomous city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China\u2019s foreign ministry in a statement on Wednesday said it; \u201cfirmly opposes and strongly condemns\u201d the Hong Kong<\/a> Autonomy Act, which unanimously passed the US Congress earlier this month and approves sanctions on Chinese officials and banks over Beijing\u2019s clampdown in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChina will make necessary responses to protect its legitimate interests, and impose sanctions on relevant US personnel and entities,\u201d the ministry added, without elaborating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump on Tuesday stepped up the pressure to punish Beijing for what he called its \u201caggressive actions\u201d in Hong Kong, a former British colony that was returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the promise of autonomy and freedoms not known in mainland China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday I signed legislation, and an executive order to hold China accountable for its aggressive actions against the people of Hong Kong,\u201d Trump told reporters at the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
