This year\u2019s Ballon d\u2019Or awards for the world\u2019s best players will not be given, organizers have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the organisers, France Football, the decision was taken after considering the \u201clack of sufficient fair conditions\u201d created by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Football activities were halted across Europe and the world in March and only started resuming in June, with games being played behind closed doors due to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prize has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, but a \u201ccrippled\u201d year 2020 will not have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere will be no edition in 2020, because it turns out, after thoughtful consideration, that all the conditions are not met,\u201d said Pascal Ferre, the editor of the magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe did not want to put an indelible asterisk on the prize list like \u2018trophy won in exceptional circumstances due to the Covid-19 health crisis\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProtecting the credibility and legitimacy of such an award also means ensuring its flawlessness over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organizers also suggested that it would not be right to judge players based on games played without spectators present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argentina and Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi won the prize for a record sixth time last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
