\nThe\nAcademic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday said the Federal Government\ncould not threaten its members with salary stoppage in order to force them to\nenroll for the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System .
\nThe union\nalso alleged that some vice – chancellors were forcing lecturers to register\nfor the IPPIS , which it had rejected .

\nThe\nFederal Government had on Wednesday said university lecturers were enrolling\nfor the IPPIS despite the opposition of ASUU.
\n
\nThe\nCoordinator of the IPPIS in the Office of Account General of the Federation ,\nMr. Olusegun Olufehinti , said , \u201c The salary is personal and if that is the\ncase, then we expect everyone that wants to be paid to enroll because that will\nbe the only basis you can get your salary. \u201d

\nBut in an\ninterview with The PUNCH on Thursday, the ASUU National President, Prof Biodun\nOgunyemi , accused some vice – chancellors of meddling in its struggle against\nthe IPPIS . He said overzealous VCs were \u201cforcing lecturers to be captured on\nthe platform. \u201d

\nHe said ,\n\u201c On the issue of non – payment of salaries , when we get to that bridge, we\nwill cross it. The issue of salaries or no salaries is not new to us in this\nstruggle. We have been threatened a number of times on non – payment of\nsalaries. So if anybody wants to frighten ASUU, it is not with salaries. So we\nhave gone beyond that. We believe that our principles and focus are more\nimportant than all these threats .\u201d

\nASUU added\nthat its team would soon complete work on an alternative platform which the\nSenate was expecting the union to come and demonstrate before it.
\nHe said ,\nby the time the union put forward its model, the fears of the government would\nbe allayed and the university system preserved .

\nOgunyemi\nhad on Sunday said the Federal Government needed to test its ( the union \u2019s )\nmodel of ensuring financial transparency rather than forcing its members to\nregister for the IPPIS , which started on Monday and would end on December 7 .
\nThe ASUU\npresident said , \u201c On the IPPIS , our members are complying with our directive\n, except for few places where some vice – chancellors forcefully imposed the\nIPPIS on them, blackmailing and even causing division among our ranks . We have\nsome of those universities where they are trying to impose the IPPIS on them.\nThe VCs caused divisions and ill -feelings among our members. We think this\nmatter does not concern them because if they actually understand the argument,\nthey will know we are actually fighting for the interests of the system and not\nfor ourselves .

\nIn the\nUniversity of Calabar , officials of the Accountant General of the Federation\nhave started registering workers for the IPPIS .

\nOne of our\ncorrespondents gathered that 11 officials arrived late on Tuesday and on\nWednesday they were seen setting up their facilities in a lecture hall behind\nthe Graduate School to begin the exercise .

\nNon-\nacademic staff of the university were seen filling forms while a handful of\nsecurity personnel of the university were at the venue .
\n
\nThe first\ngroup of staff that was being attended to were from the Department of\nAgriculture, to be followed alphabetically by workers in other departments.
\nThe leader\nof the team , Tobi Orungbemi , said , \u201c The date given to us to conduct the\nexercise is 25th November to 7 th of December . The response has been good .\nYou know this is the first day . We have to get the venue ready, set up our\nsystem . There is no resistance from anyone. \u201d

\nReps\nintervene in FG , ASUU crisis
\nBut the\nHouse of Representatives on Thursday resolved to intervene in the crisis\nbetween the Federal Government and ASUU over the IPPIS .
\nThe House\ndecided to investigate the crisis following the unanimous adoption of a motion\nby Tajudeen Abass , who called for the intervention of the parliament in the\ncrisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
