{"id":29569,"date":"2020-09-02T13:57:04","date_gmt":"2020-09-02T13:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=29569"},"modified":"2020-09-02T13:57:10","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T13:57:10","slug":"protect-your-freedom-of-expression-amnesty-intl-tells-nigerians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=29569","title":{"rendered":"Protect your freedom of expression, Amnesty Int\u2019l tells Nigerians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/amnesty-international-.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International has beckoned on Nigerians to ensure they protect their freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been concerns over perceived threats on freedom of expression in Nigeria in recent times, owing to some policies and actions of the current government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of these policies included the increase of fine for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/hate-speech-again-dss-invites-mailafia\/\">hate speech<\/a>&nbsp;from N500,000 to N5 million and several amendments recently made to the broadcasting code by the Nigerian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Nigerians have continued to kick against these policies, describing them as means by the government to deny Nigerians the right to freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a tweet on its Twitter handle, @AmnestyNigeria, on Wednesday, the international organisation asked Nigerians to \u201cprotect your freedom of expression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It further tweeted, \u201cYour voice matters. You have the right to say what you think, share information and demand a better world. You also have the right to agree or disagree with those in power, and to express these opinions in peaceful protests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty, in another tweet, demanded from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/dss-cautions-don-jazzy-tiwa-savage-over-negative-comments-against-buharis-govt\/\">President Muhammadu Buhari<\/a>, his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo and the Nigerian Police for the whereabouts of a government critic, Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, who was abducted since August 2019, in Kaduna State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDadiyata \u2013 a critic of #Nigerian government was abducted by gunmen in August 2019.
