{"id":31204,"date":"2020-09-14T10:54:32","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T10:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=31204"},"modified":"2020-09-14T10:54:39","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T10:54:39","slug":"death-sentence-on-singer-falana-drags-kano-govt-fg-to-african-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=31204","title":{"rendered":"DEATH SENTENCE ON SINGER: Falana drags Kano govt, FG to African Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/femi-Falana.jpg\" alt=\"femi Falana\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Human Rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN), Femi Falana, has dragged the Kano State government and the Federal Government of Nigeria before the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights in Banjul, Gambia, over the death sentence imposed on Kano singer Sharif Yahya Sharif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/blasphemy-falana-receives-case-details-to-now-appeal-death-sentence-on-singer\/\">Falana<\/a>&nbsp;in a petition dated September 8, 2020, which was made available to newmen on Sunday prayed that the Commission exercise its mandates and authority under the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights and pursuant to the commission\u2019s order 100(1) of the commission\u2019s Rules of Procedure, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition also argued that Nigerian authorities continue to violate fair trial and other rights of the petitioner despite their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights and other international treaties to which Nigeria is a state party<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition by Falana reads thus in part; \u201cOur communication details multiple violations of his right to life and fair trial rights guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, and resolutions on moratorium on executions adopted by both the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights and the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights and other international treaties to which Nigeria is a state party, the Nigerian authorities continue to violate the fair trial and other rights of the petitioner.
