{"id":31407,"date":"2020-09-15T13:46:27","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T13:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=31407"},"modified":"2020-09-15T13:46:34","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T13:46:34","slug":"former-brazilian-president-faces-new-money-laundering-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=31407","title":{"rendered":"Former Brazilian President faces new money laundering charge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Brazils-Luiz-Inacio-Lula-da-Silva.jpg\" alt=\"BRAZIL: Jailed ex-President Lula bows out of presidential race\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazil\u2019s ex-president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, popularly known as Lula, faces new corruption charge as part of investigations into the largest corruption scandal in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement by prosecutors in the Brazilian state of Curitiba, the former president, Lula, was accused of accepting four million reais (759,000 dollars) worth of bribes disguised as donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the prosecutors, the ex-president received bribes from construction giant Odebrecht as donations to the institute that carries his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They alleged that he illegally received the funds in \u2018Instituto Lula\u2019 accounts between December 2013 and March 2014 in exchange for granting contracts with state-run oil company Petrobras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorneys for Lula said they were surprised by the charges and rejected them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They added that the charge was an attempt by the prosecutors to criminalise four legitimate donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the fourth charge Lula has faced in a probe called \u2018Lava Jato\u2019 or \u2018car wash\u2019 corruption investigation, in less than a year after the country\u2019s top court ordered him freed from jail in November, while he appealed his conviction in another case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lula\u2019s conviction and imprisonment prevented him from contesting the October 2018 presidential election, which paved the way for the victory of right-winger Jair Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former judge Sergio Moro, who issued the ruling, later became justice minister in President Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By Emmanuella Ibe\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil\u2019s ex-president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, popularly known as Lula, faces new corruption charge as part of investigations into the largest corruption scandal in Latin America.
