{"id":31905,"date":"2020-09-18T08:45:44","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T08:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=31905"},"modified":"2020-09-18T08:45:49","modified_gmt":"2020-09-18T08:45:49","slug":"inec-deploys-6000-smart-card-readers-for-ondo-govship-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=31905","title":{"rendered":"INEC deploys 6,000 smart card readers for Ondo gov\u2019ship election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Mahmood-Yakubu12-lead.jpg\" alt=\"INEC says court lacks jurisdiction to hear Okorocha\u2019s suit, asks for dismissal\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the movement of no fewer than 6,000 smart card readers ahead of the governorship election in Ondo State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was made known on Thursday by Mr Festus Okoye, INECs National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education when he appeared at a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Okoye, who was responding to questions on alternative plans by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/INEC\/\">INEC<\/a>, given the destruction of 5,141 smart cards readers in its Ondo office by a mysterious fire, the 6,000 smart card readers were ordered from the commission\u2019s Oyo State office to Ondo for the smooth conduct of the Oct. 10, election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said; \u201cAs at today, we have given an order that all the smart card readers in Oyo state office should be moved to Ondo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd they have over 6,000 smart card readers in Oyo and so we are not going to have any problems reconfiguring them and using them for the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe decision to move the smart card readers from other states to conduct the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/edo-ondo-elections-to-determine-buharis-electoral-legacy-tambuwal\/\">Ondo elections<\/a>&nbsp;was taken because of the long duration required to purchase a smart card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe process of ordering one smart card reader takes at least six months, hence the decision to move smart card readers from other states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Okoye, however, said the commission was also looking at a more secured way of storing its smart card readers to avert any further destruction of the cards given the expensive nature of the cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause these smart card readers were bought with Nigeria\u2019s taxpayers\u2019 money we have a responsibility to make sure that we don\u2019t waste the resources of this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we have recovered quickly and we are proceeding with the Ondo State election, noting will stop the conduct of that election,\u201d Okoye concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the movement of no fewer than 6,000 smart card readers ahead of the governorship election in Ondo State.
