{"id":32271,"date":"2020-09-23T14:48:46","date_gmt":"2020-09-23T14:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=32271"},"modified":"2020-09-23T14:48:54","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T14:48:54","slug":"cbn-to-bear-half-of-farmers-losses-as-nigeria-reels-from-worst-drought-in-five-yrs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=32271","title":{"rendered":"CBN to bear half of farmers\u2019 losses as Nigeria reels from worst drought in five yrs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/1600855901572blob.jpg\" alt=\"CBN to bear half of farmers\u2019 losses as Nigeria reels from worst drought in five yrs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will henceforth bear the loss burden of farmers in its Anchor Borrowers Programme by 50%, as food crisis escalates in Nigeria, spurred by the worst dry season in five years, Yusuf Yila, its development finance unit head said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Yila told farmers and stakeholders in Abuja, that the policy shift and urgency to share risks with farmers resulted from the bank\u2019s resolve to bolster food sufficiency in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deluges of rain are aggravating the plight of farmers, particularly in northern Nigeria, a region not known for heavy rains, where rice plantations were recently submerged below floods, causing farmers to count loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yila said the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/banks-credit-to-the-economy-expands-by-n3-77tn-in-15-months-cbn\/\">CBN<\/a>\u00a0would set its gaze primarily on rice, maize and tomato production during the dry season this year, noting the apex bank\u2019s commitment to yield improvement of the crops. He revealed the bank was willing to finance wheat production also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food scarcity in Africa\u2019s biggest country by population, where more than 200 million people live, has been helped by government\u2019s protectionist policies in agriculture, which sometimes could be sometimes hasty, impelling it to shut its land borders to food imports last August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Muhammadu Buhari added fertiliser and all food products to the mix this month when he directed the apex bank to call off sales of the foreign exchange used for importing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The failure of dry spell farming could have disastrous implications for food production and hurt Nigeria\u2019s food security campaign, Yila added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigerian inflation rate hit its highest point in 28 months at 13.22% in August after rising without cease for 12 months, the statistics office said in its consumer price index report last week. A separate index, which measures movements in food prices, observed food inflation rose to 16% last month.
