{"id":32920,"date":"2020-09-28T14:34:52","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T14:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=32920"},"modified":"2020-09-28T14:34:59","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T14:34:59","slug":"ex-president-of-pakistan-indicted-on-money-laundering-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=32920","title":{"rendered":"Ex- president of Pakistan indicted on money laundering charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Asif-Ali-Zardari.jpg\" alt=\"Former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari arrested over fake bank accounts\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Former president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, was on Monday indicted for money laundering, in the latest of legal actions against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/north-koreas-slain-half-brother-was-a-cia-informant-report\/\">Zardari<\/a>&nbsp;who is a widower of former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, served as the president of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013 and is currently a member of parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has since June 2019 been facing a number of court cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zardari alongside his sister and 14 other people were also indicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a court hearing on Monday, Zardari and his sister denied the charges against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zardari\u2019s charges are related to money laundering through suspicious bank accounts and companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Zardari\u2019s supporters, the Indictment is part of a wider trend against politicians who opposed the Prime Minister, Imran Khan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan, who won the 2018 election, was accused by Zardari and other opposition politicians, of political victimization and is said to be targeting the opposition in the guise of accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked by court reporters for his comments on Monday\u2019s indictment, Zardari replied with a verse in Urdu: \u201cWe have passed through such junctures earlier also.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another senior Pakistan Peoples Party figure, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed, said in an interview that the indictment was a routine process in court proceedings and that the real issue was a lack of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere is the evidence? There is no evidence against Mr. Zardari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has spent several years in jail on trumped-up charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, it\u2019s nothing for him. But for us the biggest concern is his ailing health, \u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/28\/world\/asia\/pakistan-asif-ali-zardari-imran-khan.html#click=https:\/\/t.co\/VdEspnTNd1\">he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmed added that the government had been increasing the pressure on opposition parties since Sept. 20, after a meeting of opposition groups has called for, among other things, an end to military interference in the Pakistan\u2019s politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese court cases are the usual tactics to intimidate and threaten the political leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we are not bothered by such tactics,\u201d Ahmed said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, was on Monday indicted for money laundering, in the latest of legal actions against him.
