{"id":33618,"date":"2020-10-02T07:40:27","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T07:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=33618"},"modified":"2020-10-02T07:40:32","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T07:40:32","slug":"nigerian-govt-to-deliver-lagos-ibadan-rail-line-in-december-as-cargo-traffic-weighs-down-apapa-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=33618","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian govt to deliver Lagos-Ibadan rail-line in December as cargo traffic weighs down Apapa Port"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nigerian-railway.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nigerian government is looking to complete the Lagos-Ibadan railway by December or early January 2021, spurred by the urgency to ease the Apapa port of cargo traffic by conveying them to various delivery points through trains, the Minister of Transportation said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amaechi disclosed plans to synergise with his roads and housing counterpart,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/nigerian-govt-constructing-revamping-40-major-bridges-fashola\/\">Babatunde Fashola<\/a>&nbsp;as well as the Lagos State government, on a live television programme, with a view to relieving roads of large-capacity trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am his biggest champion when he (Amaechi) is presenting his request in the cabinet for the rails because I know that without the rail the roads will not last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe tankers are plying excess cargo; they are moving 60,000 tonnes instead of 33,000, 40,000 or 45,000 tonnes maximum. So, the best way is to move all that cargo into the tracks,\u201d said Mr Fashola who joined the programme virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The movement of freight to rail is anticipated to commence with the Lagos-Ibadan rail line once construction winds down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI intend to approach him (Fashola) in January and approach the Lagos State governor so that we can see how we can deal with Apapa\u2026 then if we do, there will be a need to decide what vehicles can go to Lagos and the capacity of such vehicles or trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we do that, we can then transfer all the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/nigerian-govt-charges-contractors-to-deliver-lagos-ibadan-rail-project-by-december\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cargoes that come from Apapa seaport<\/a>&nbsp;to the railway.
