{"id":34546,"date":"2020-10-08T10:39:53","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T10:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=34546"},"modified":"2020-10-08T10:40:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T10:40:03","slug":"nigeria-has-largest-poor-population-in-sub-saharan-africa-at-79m-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=34546","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria has largest poor population in sub-Saharan Africa at 79m \u2013World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/1602140174262blob-e1602141961512.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria, Africa\u2019s biggest country by population with more than 200 million people, now has the largest concentration of the most indigent people in sub-Saharan Africa at 79 million, a report from Washington-based World Bank Wednesday showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It retains 20 per cent of the region\u2019s poor people, meaning that one in every five poor people in sub-Saharan Africa is a Nigerian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlmost half of poor people in Sub-Saharan Africa live in just five economies: Nigeria (79&nbsp;million), the Democratic Republic of Congo (60 million), Tanzania (28 million), Ethiopia (26&nbsp;million), and Madagascar (20&nbsp;million),\u201d World Bank said in its&nbsp;<em>Poverty and Shared Prosperity 2020<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penury is a vexed question in Nigeria, which is paradoxically Africa\u2019s biggest economy, with the benighted north the worst hit on account to its vulnerability to insurgent attacks and religious tensions, recently making Nigeria also the most violent nation in the world at peacetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Bank said in a commentary in January the area&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/nigeria-hosts-largest-number-of-extremely-poor-people-87-of-them-come-from-the-north-world-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accounts for 87 per cent of Nigeria\u2019s entire poor population<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Nigeria, administrative areas in the north and northeast have poverty rates higher than the national average, but poverty rates are lower in areas closer to the coast,\u201d the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brettonwoodsproject.org\/2019\/01\/art-320747\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bretton Woods institution<\/a>\u00a0stated in the new report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It put Nigeria\u2019s poverty rate at 39.1%, adding that \u201cusing the estimate for India\u2026 would suggest that Nigeria has the second-highest number of poor in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 50 per cent of the households polled by the World Bank in an effort to gauge the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on social wellbeing of citizens admitted cutting their food consumption in response to the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDepending on duration and severity, the impact of reduced food intake on children\u2019s health, cognitive development, and future human capital accumulation, as well as on current adult health and productivity, may be substantial,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food inflation in Nigeria climbed to 16% in August from 15.48% the previous, while headline inflation touched its 28-month high of 13.22%, having risen for 12 straight months without relenting, the statistics office&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/just-in-inflation-hits-28-month-high-rises-to-13-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in its latest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/consumerpriceindex.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consumer price index<\/a>&nbsp;report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria, Africa\u2019s biggest country by population with more than 200 million people, now has the largest concentration of the most indigent people in sub-Saharan Africa at 79 million, a report from Washington-based World Bank Wednesday showed.
