{"id":35187,"date":"2020-10-14T10:21:21","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T10:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=35187"},"modified":"2020-10-14T10:21:28","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T10:21:28","slug":"kwara-govt-to-labour-our-purse-too-lean-to-meet-your-demands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=35187","title":{"rendered":"KWARA GOVT TO LABOUR: Our purse too lean to meet your demands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Abdulrahman-Abdulrazaq11.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kwara State government has told the labour movement in the state, that the government cannot meet its demands as it has other pressing matters to commit money to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/kwara-gov-abdulrazaq-replaces-chief-of-staff-who-died-of-covid-19\/\">Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazak<\/a>&nbsp;who said that the state government\u2019s treasury was too lean to accommodate the demands of the labour movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the state governor, who visited the dilapidated Banni Secondary School in Ilorin, if the state accedes to the request of the labour movement, it could overwhelm its entire resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor AbdulRazak said; \u201cIf we accede to the request of the labour movement, we will not be able to do any other thing, other than paying salaries of workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur schools have collapsed, the basic health facilities need to be fixed, and we need to do much more for the population,\u201d the governor said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Rafiu Ajakaye in Ilorin, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the; \u201cLocals say students sit on bare stones in the classrooms, many of which have collapsed, or have had their roofs blown off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe situation in Banni Community Secondary School is typical of what exists in most parts of the state, and a state with such huge infrastructural deficits, cannot spend 100 percent of its earnings on paying salaries,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said; \u201cWe want to pay the minimum wage, where we disagree with the labour is the consequential adjustment that they are asking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will mean that we cannot do any other thing outside salary payment\u201d the governor added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor Abdulrazaq described the Banni Community Secondary School as totally dilapidated, lamenting that it was amazing that \u201cstudents learn inside there,\u201d adding,\u201d for safety reasons, some structures of the school are to be shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am not happy with the situation of this school and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe laboratory is gone, so there is a need for proper investment in our schools,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the labour movement\u2019s strike in the state, governor Abdulrazaq said, \u201cWe can only pay on a scale that is affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can imagine a situation where local governments\u2019 are earning N2.6b a month and the salaries are almost exactly the same, when you add their other expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe labour unions want an increase of that to N3b, which is N400m per month increase, from where will the local governments get that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe consequential increase should not be that much, that is not affordable, because we have schools, hospitals, road infrastructure, and we are not going to spend 100 percent of our income on paying salaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor Abdulrazaq said the government \u201cis always open to negotiations, but noted that; \u201cThere is a court injunction and as far as the government is concerned, there is no strike. Everybody should report to work.
