{"id":36660,"date":"2020-10-26T15:43:47","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T15:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=36660"},"modified":"2020-10-26T15:44:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T15:44:02","slug":"govt-must-reward-business-owners-affected-by-looting-falana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=36660","title":{"rendered":"Govt must reward business owners affected by looting \u2013Falana"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/femi-Falana.jpg\" alt=\"femi Falana\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments at national and sub-national levels must compensate business owners for losses incurred by them through looting by hoodlums, following the #EndSARS protests against police brutality, human rights activist and constitutional lawyer, Femi Falana, said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He denounced the devastation of lives and properties in the mayhem that trailed the Lekki shootings in Lagos while attending an interview on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/nbc-fines-arise-tv-channels-ait-n9m-over-coverage-of-endsars-protests\/\">Arise TV<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, families of casualties in the protests must equally be compensated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I sympathise with those who have lost goods, while I sympathise with families that have lost their loved ones, we must make a case out of what has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am talking about the development of our laws. Those who have lost goods, those who have lost properties that were not insured, should put sentiments apart, don\u2019t say because the government in Abuja is our party, no, the law has left that stage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that every Nigerian has right to protection of life and property and that government must pay for loss arising from negligence through lack of proper policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am not talking about humanitarian assistance. As a matter of law, if anybody dies in the process, the family members have rights to make a claim and we have cases where this has been decided by our courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, let nobody in Abuja say these properties in Abuja were destroyed by hoodlums, it will never happen again.
