One of President Donald Trump\u2019s staunchest allies, in the person of US Attorney General, William Barr, is set to resign from his role before Christmas, following the confirmation of Trump\u2019s election defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement issued on Monday shortly after the Electoral College confirmed President Trump\u2019s loss to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden<\/a>, Barr said that he would leave office on Dec. 23, a little less than a month before Biden is sworn in on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump tweeted Barr\u2019s resignation letter saying: \u201cOur relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Barr\u2019s letter to the president began by saying he \u201cappreciated the opportunity to update\u201d the president on the Department of Justice\u2019s (DOJ) review of voter fraud allegations in the recent election and \u201chow these allegations will continue to be pursued\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen will take over as acting attorney general after Barr\u2019s departure, Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barr\u2019s resignation letter was released shortly after he briefed the president about the Justice Department\u2019s review into the Trump campaign\u2019s voter fraud claims. In the letter, he also praised what he called Trump\u2019s historic record, saying he had helped boost the economy, strengthen the military and curb illegal immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
