{"id":42112,"date":"2021-04-08T14:02:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T14:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=42112"},"modified":"2021-04-08T14:02:05","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T14:02:05","slug":"amid-fgs-struggle-to-pay-doctors-nurses-write-ngige-demand-increased-allowance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=42112","title":{"rendered":"Amid FG\u2019s struggle to pay doctors, Nurses write Ngige, demand increased allowance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Dr-Chris-Ngige.jpg\" alt=\"Waba\u2019s Monday protest directive unlawful, Ngige tells workers\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The University Graduates of Nursing Science Association (UGONSA) has urged the Federal Government to increase members\u2019 monthly hazard allowance from the current N5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The association stated in a letter dated March 31 that the upward adjustment should reflect level of hazards to which healthcare workers in their cadre were exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter, made available to newsmen in Abakaliki on Thursday, April 8, was addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/nma-berates-ngige-over-comments-that-doctors-arent-paid-abroad\/\">Dr Chris Ngige<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was signed by Chief Solomon Egwuenu and Philip Eteng, Chairman and Secretary of the association, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Captioned: \u201cEquitable Adjustment of Health Workers\u2019 Hazard Allowances,\u201d it reads in part, \u201cSir, we write to commend your on-going effort at ensuring that our age-long cry for the review of health workers\u2019 hazard allowance is addressed by President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, we call for equity in the adjustment of the hazard allowance such that the template for the upward review shall be prorated to the level of exposure to clinical hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the umpteenth time, we wish to re-emphasise that the current N5,000 payable to nurses, who swim in an ocean of hazards, as hazard allowance epitomises insensitivity on the side of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe treatment shows a lack of commitment or the political will to reposition our healthcare system for efficient service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGlobally, the performances of healthcare systems are proportional to the level of welfare and motivation advanced to nurses; nursing is the cornerstone upon which care is anchored in the healthcare delivery system.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union decried poor treatment meted to nurses describing it as the bane of the Nigerian health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery progressive health system understands that nursing is the heartbeat of the healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is better late than never; a reviewed allowance equitably configured to reflect the level of exposure to clinical hazards such that nurses who are exposed the most are paid the most will motivate them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resident doctors in the country are currently on strike, as the federal government has continued to seek ways to end the industrial action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pausity of funds is one reason government has given for being unable to meet the demands of the striking doctors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University Graduates of Nursing Science Association (UGONSA) has urged the Federal Government to increase members\u2019 monthly hazard allowance from the current N5,000.
