{"id":43728,"date":"2021-05-17T07:19:23","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T07:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=43728"},"modified":"2021-05-17T07:19:31","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T07:19:31","slug":"politicians-inec-responsible-for-poor-conduct-of-elections-in-nigeria-kaigama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=43728","title":{"rendered":"Politicians, INEC responsible for poor conduct of elections in Nigeria \u2013 Kaigama"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Archbishop-Ignatius-Kaigama.jpg\" alt=\"Pope Francis confirms Onaiyekan\u2019s retirement, ratifies Kaigama\u2019s appointment as Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Ignatius Kaigama, on Sunday blamed politicians, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders for the poor conduct of elections in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his homily at Our Lady Queen of Peace Pro-Cathedral, in Abuja, Kaigama said the ways elections were conducted in Nigeria, raised doubts on whether people\u2019s votes count at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The cleric said the quest to win by hook or crook and the winner takes all syndrome, was the reason why a sitting governor\u2019s party won all seats in a state\u2019s local government election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the Nigeria electoral system laid the foundation for electoral violence and the extravagant use of power and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Catholic Archbishop urged Nigerians to learn from how Peter in the Bible led a group to elect the successor of Judas Iscariot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe manner of election demonstrated that they relied on scripture and prayer to find a replacement for Judas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe election was based purely on merit, the person was to be a consistent follower of Jesus, throughout Jesus\u2019 ministry, up to the day of His ascension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dTwo men were put forward. There was no lobbying; internal democracy was at play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dThe group prayed for guidance, proclaimed their trust in God, and went on to cast lots and the lot fell on Matthias who became one of the Apostles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are lessons from the election of Matthias for contemporary politics in Africa: election must be peaceful, without electoral manipulation, partiality or ungodly conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kaigama stressed the need for the positive use of media in conducting free and fair elections and ensuring peace in the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cleric added: \u201cAs Pope Francis said in his message, \u2018the risk of misinformation being spread on social media has become evident to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have known for some time that news and even images can be easily manipulated for any number of reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn communicating, we must ensure objectivity, respect for human rights and dignity, the common good, avoiding hostility and confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere must be a responsible and accountable use of the media or else we breed anarchy and chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Ignatius Kaigama, on Sunday blamed politicians, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders for the poor conduct of elections in the country.
