Buhari, 76, won a\nsecond term with 56 percent of the vote<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria<\/a>‘s top court has\ndismissed an appeal by main opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar to overturn the\nresult of February’s presidential vote in which President Muhammadu Buhari<\/a> won re-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have examined all the briefs and the exhibits for over\ntwo weeks and we agree that there is no merit in this appeal,” Chief\nJustice Tanko Muhammad said on Wednesday following the Supreme Court’s\njudgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The appeal is dismissed,” he concluded in a decision\nmade unanimously with six court justices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chief justice did not give reasons for the judgement but\nannounced they would be released at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February election<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judgement brought an end to a bitter eight-month legal battle\nsince February’s polls when Buhari, 76, won a second term with 56 percent of\nthe vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delayed vote was marked by low turnout and saw violence across\nthe country, with accusations of vote-rigging by both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abubakar, the 72-year-old former vice president of the main\nopposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), came in second with 41 percent, and\nimmediately branded the result a “sham”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition parties lodged a legal challenge against the result,\nwhich was rejected by an election tribunal in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PDP described the ruling as “provocative, barefaced\nsubversion of justice”, launching an appeal in Nigeria’s Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abubakar said he had been cheated of the chance to lead Africa’s\nmost populous nation after a conspiracy between the electoral commission and\nBuhari’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European Union<\/a> and local\nobservers spoke of “serious problems” in the polls, which was hit by\nviolence including 53 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some reported vote-buying, intimidation and violence towards\nvoters and officials, which have been a problem in previous elections in\nNigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
