{"id":44626,"date":"2021-06-14T14:50:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T14:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=44626"},"modified":"2021-06-14T14:50:13","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T14:50:13","slug":"coalition-urges-buhari-to-reverse-unlawful-twitter-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=44626","title":{"rendered":"Coalition urges Buhari to reverse \u2018unlawful\u2019 Twitter ban"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Buhari-4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The agitation to ensure a reversal on the ban on Twitter operations within the Nigerian cyberspace rages as a coalition of civil society organisations numbering 70 urged the Federal Government to reverse the ban placed on Twitter and withdraw the threat to prosecute anyone using the app in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was contained in a jointly-signed statement issued on Monday by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/buharis-cattle-grazing-approach-not-in-tune-with-modern-trends-akeredolu\/\">coalition,<\/a>&nbsp;who condemned the action of the Federal Government describing it as \u2018unlawful.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group comprises organisations as Amnesty International Nigeria; CISLAC (Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre); Global Rights; Nigeria Mourns; Business and Human Rights Roundtable; Tap Initiative for citizens development; Civil society consortium on civic space; Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD); Alliances for Africa; WILPF Nigeria; Echoes of Women in Africa Initiatives; Akubeze Okocha; B.E.E Initiative; Access to Justice; Sterling Centre for Law &amp; Development; Concerned Nigerians; JENNON-PIUS &amp;Co initiative; Education as a Vaccine; Invictus Africa; Dinidari Foundation; Raising New Voices Initiative; Centre for Impact Advocacy (CIA); Stand To End Rape Initiative (STER); BudgIT; The Interactive Initiative for Social Impact; Enough is Enough (EiE); Yiaga Africa; among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement reads, \u201cWe, the undersigned civil society organizations are concerned about the repression and escalating crackdown on human rights by the Nigerian government, particularly the rights to freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe strongly condemn the arbitrary and unlawful suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, by the authorities, and the resulting restrictions on the human rights of people, as well as the threat to prosecute anyone using Twitter in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe, therefore, call on the Nigerian authorities to immediately rescind the unlawful suspension of Twitter in Nigeria and withdraw the threat to prosecute anyone using Twitter in the country,\u201d the statement read in part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The groups also condemn the \u201cdirective\u201d issued by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for all broadcast stations to deactivate their Twitter accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They asked that the Federal Government, \u201cimmediately withdraw the directive to broadcast stations to deactivate their Twitter accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The agitation to ensure a reversal on the ban on Twitter operations within the Nigerian cyberspace rages as a coalition of civil society organisations numbering 70 urged the Federal Government to reverse the ban placed on Twitter and withdraw the threat to prosecute anyone using the app in the country.
