Anthony Joshua \u201creally wanted\u201d to face Tyson Fury in an all-British heavyweight unification bout, according to physio Rob Madden \u2013 however, after talks between the pair collapsed, the Gypsy King is no longer on AJ\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob Madden, Anthony Joshua\u2019s physio, has claimed AJ was desperate to face Tyson Fury in a heavyweight unification bout before talks between the pair collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Joshua had been expected to face Fury in a fight that was widely considered the biggest in British boxing history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in the final stages of negotiations, an arbitration court ordered Fury to face American heavyweight Deontay Wilder instead, leaving AJ without a dance partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Madden claimed that while the whole team were disappointed with the breakdown in talks, the Gypsy King is no longer on AJ\u2019s mind and he is instead focussed on what lies ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to lie, it was disappointing for everyone. I was disappointed, obviously AJ very much so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was ready, he wanted it, we were planning for it. But this is boxing, it\u2019s full of politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFury\u2019s not on our minds right now; he can do what he\u2019s doing and we\u2019ll be ready when he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of Fury, Joshua is now expected to face the undefeated Oleksandr Usyk, with the bout set to take place on September 25 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laegely considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, Usyk is the former undisputed cruiserweight champion and has previously defeated the likes of Tony Bellew, Murat Gassiev and Mairis Briedis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usyk stepped up to heavyweight in 2019 and retired America\u2019s Chazz Witherspoon in just seven rounds on debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He followed this with a solid victory over Derek Chisora via decision and is now set to face fellow 2012 Olympic gold medallist Joshua in a bid to become a two-weight world champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joshua will certainly still be the favourite going into the bout due to his significant size and power advantage. However, it goes without saying that Usyk is far from a mere stepping-stone towards an all-British unification bout with Tyson Fury, or a blockbuster bout with Wilder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthony Joshua is set to face former cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk in a bout expected to take place on September 25 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
