{"id":46985,"date":"2021-09-09T14:16:44","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T14:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=46985"},"modified":"2021-09-09T14:16:45","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T14:16:45","slug":"guinea-coup-ecowas-suspend-guinea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=46985","title":{"rendered":"GUINEA COUP: ECOWAS suspend Guinea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"773\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/img_3570.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46984\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>West Africa bloc ECOWAS has decided to suspend Guinea following a military coup in the country, the organisation said after an emergency summit on Wednesday, calling for \u201can immediate return to constitutional order\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Special forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya seized power in the West African state on Sunday and arrested President Alpha Conde, sparking international condemnation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conde, 83, had come under increasing fire for perceived authoritarianism, with dozens of opposition activists arrested after a violently disputed election last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the putsch in Guinea has sparked fears of democratic backsliding across West Africa \u2014 where military strongmen are an increasingly familiar sight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has drawn parallels with its neighbour Mali: the Sahel state has suffered two coups since August last year led by Colonel Assimi Goita, who was also a special forces commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders from the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held an extraordinary video summit to discuss the turmoil in Guinea on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the meeting, ECOWAS said in a statement regional leaders decided \u201cto suspend Guinea from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies with immediate effect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bloc also demanded that Guinea\u2019s military release Conde and held the coup plotters responsible for the ousted leader\u2019s physical safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A high-level ECOWAS mission will be dispatched immediately, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Authority will review the situation in light of developments in the Republic of Guinea and the Assessment mission report,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When faced with a similar predicament in Mali last year, ECOWAS imposed economic sanctions on the country but lifted them after Mali\u2019s ruling military committed to restoring civilian rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doumbouya, hours after taking power in the capital Conakry, appeared on television and accused the Conde government of \u201cendemic corruption\u201d and of \u201ctrampling on citizens\u2019 rights\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has pledged to open talks on forming a new government, but it is not yet clear when, or under what form, these may take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government to be installed will be that of national unity and will ensure this political transition,\u201d Doumbouya tweeted on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Free and democratic\u2019<\/strong><br \/>Public discontent in Guinea had been growing for months over a flatlining Covid-hit economy and the leadership of Conde, who became the first democratically elected president in 2010 and was re-elected in 2015.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But last year, Conde pushed through a new constitution that allowed him to run for a third term in October 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move sparked mass demonstrations in which dozens of protesters were killed. Conde won the election but the political opposition maintained that the poll was a sham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guinea\u2019s military on Tuesday freed about 80 political opponents of Conde\u2019s who had been detained during the turbulent electoral period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ismael Conde, one of the detainees, told AFP upon his release that he was praying for a \u201cnew era for Guinea\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are leaving invigorated to continue the struggle for a free and democratic Guinea,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coup has triggered broad diplomatic condemnation, including from the African Union, European Union and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Straighten the country out\u2019<\/strong><br \/>No deaths have been officially reported in the putsch, although reports in Guinean media have suggested that between a dozen and 20 people were killed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP was unable to independently confirm the reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coup was met with jubilation in some parts of Conakry, where hundreds residents turned out on the streets to applaud passing soldiers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cellou Dalein Diallo, the country\u2019s main opposition leader, has backed the military regime \u2014 although he called for the army to uphold the rule of law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Bambeto, an opposition stronghold in Conakry, resident Abdoul Gadiri Diallo told AFP on Tuesday that he supports Doumbouya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is going to straighten out this country very well, we are counting on him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doumbouya is in his early forties and was trained at France\u2019s Ecole de Guerre military academy.
