One death was recorded and government had been put on a marathon of desperation to stem the tide by closing down essential daily life activities, reinforcing containment measures and considering several emergency options knowing that her fragile health system will be swiftly overwhelmed if the disease spreads beyond a small number of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wednesday was no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Markets in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja closed partially in response to government\u2019s stay-at-home order and panic buying intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both cities \u2013 Lagos and Abuja \u2013 have the highest number of cases \u2013 32 and 10 respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visits to some markets and supermarkets in Nigeria\u2019s capital and its commercial nerve on Wednesday showed a maddening rush by buyers and shoppers to stock up their homes with essentials to last the period they are expected to stay at home with their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Coronavirus in Aso Rock<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Chief of Staff to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/383789-coronavirus-why-nigerias-ministers-governors-dangote-should-be-tested.html\">President Muhammadu Buhari<\/a><\/strong>, Abba Kyari, tested positive to COVID-19 on Tuesday, the presidential villa in Aso rock has been the focus of the ongoing outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, the president\u2019s spokesperson, Femi Adesina&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/coronavirus\/383944-coronavirus-nigerias-presidential-villa-on-partial-lockdown-official.html\">announced a \u2018partial lockdown<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 of the Presidential Villa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of reporters covering the State House was also&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/more-news\/383891-coronavirus-presidency-reduces-number-of-journalists-covering-state-house.html\">reduced<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>from over 100 to about 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Major highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The major highpoint of the day was perhaps a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/coronavirus\/383918-coronavirus-atiku-urges-fg-to-distribute-n10000-to-every-nigerian.html\">call by Atiku Abubakar<\/a><\/strong>, a former vice president, to provide palliatives for millions of Nigerians whom it ordered to stay-at-home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt an approximate 30 million households or thereabouts, the government should devise modalities to distribute N10,000 as a supplement for foodstuff to each household, among other palliative measures, with no one left behind,\u201d Mr Abubakar, an opposition leader, whose son Mohammed recently tested positive for Covid-19, wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost immediately, the call received support from many Nigerians who urged the government to emulate western countries that had launched similar measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Senate finalised on Tuesday a $1 trillion economic stabilisation plan to help workers and businesses in the country as coronavirus bites harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, unveiled an $82-billion aid package to help Canadians and businesses, including direct income support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nigerian government had\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/ssouth-west\/382565-breaking-nigeria-slashes-petrol-price-to-n125.html\">last Wednesday announced<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the reduction of the pump price of petrol to N125, a N20 difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most trending topics on twitter was the rise in a number of politically exposed persons in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside Mr Kyari, other prominent people that have tested positive are the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed; the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye; and Mohammed, Mr Abubakar\u2019s son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others, including&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/383789-coronavirus-why-nigerias-ministers-governors-dangote-should-be-tested.html\">several state governors<\/a><\/strong>, are on self-isolation after coming in contact with those infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Showing no empathy, many Nigerians took to twitter to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/383950-no-empathy-angry-nigerians-attack-political-leaders-infected-with-coronavirus.html\">mock them<\/a><\/strong>, basing their stance on the poor governance the country has witnessed from different governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geopolitical zones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a highlight of activities in the six geopolitical zones on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South-west<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/ssouth-west\/383739-coronavirus-ondo-orders-closure-of-markets.html\">said<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>he is on self-isolation as a precautionary measure, his counterpart in Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/coronavirus\/383871-coronavirus-gov-fayemi-goes-on-self-isolation.html\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>the immediate closure of all markets, malls, and shops in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, 20 judges from Osun State judiciary, who recently returned from Dubai, UAE, are in self-isolation, the government announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South-south<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Delta State House of Assembly adjourned sitting indefinitely while Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye, tested positive. Governor Godwin Obaseki is currently in self-isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South-east<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anambra State House of Assembly&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/ssouth-east\/383877-coronavirus-anambra-assembly-adjourns-plenary-indefinitely.html\">adjourned plenary indefinitely<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;while Enugu&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/ssouth-east\/383749-coronavirus-enugu-orders-civil-servants-to-work-from-home.html\">directed<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>all public officers in the state to work from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, a woman wearing a face mask was&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/383905-coronavirus-woman-says-she-was-taunted-in-aba-market-for-wearing-face-mask.html\">taunted<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>inside a market in Aba, Abia state. The incident further exposed the level of ignorance on the ravaging coronavirus in many parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North-east<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/nnorth-east\/383876-coronavirus-taraba-govt-directs-workers-to-stay-at-home.html\">directed<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;workers on grade level 1 to 12 to stay at home for two weeks while Bauchi State Governor, Mr Mohammed,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/nnorth-east\/383767-coronavirus-bauchi-governor-speaks-from-isolation.html\">spoke<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>from his isolation after his&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/383648-breaking-bauchi-governor-tests-positive-to-coronavirus.html\">diagnosis with coronavirus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Bauchi commissioner Aliyu Tilde,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/coronavirus\/383851-coronavirus-inadequate-test-kits-pose-grave-danger-to-nigeria-official.html\">decried the shortage<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;of Covid-19 test kits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Tilde, who suspected he had been exposed to a positive patient, also said he was unable to get tested because test kits brought to the state were not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North-central<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niger State governor, Abubakar Bello, went on&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/north-central\/383931-coronavirus-niger-governor-goes-into-self-isolation.html\">self-isolation<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;after meeting Governor Mohammed at Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum\u2019s meeting on March 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kwarastate.gov.ng\/\">Kwara State Government<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;prohibited all forms of commercial transportation within the state. It also&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/north-central\/383909-coronavirus-kwara-govt-bans-commercial-transportation-orders-closure-of-markets.html\">ordered<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>the closure of all mosques and churches, and markets of non-essential commodities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North-west<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kano State government&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/nwest\/383920-covid-19-kano-govt-shuts-tsangaya-quranic-schools.html\">directed<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>all Tsangaya and Qur\u2019anic schools to close down as part of the fight against the spread of coronavirus in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kebbi State House of Assembly also&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/regional\/nwest\/383819-coronavirus-kebbi-assembly-suspends-legislative-activities.html\">suspended<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>some legislative activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The World and Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/\">468,905 confirmed cases<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/coronavirus-death-toll\/\">21,200 deaths<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;from the coronavirus, according&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/coronavirus-cases\/\">to worldometer,<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;a platform tracking the Covid19 pandemic worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, in Africa, more than\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AfricaCDC\/status\/1242724814458105857\">2,400 cases<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0have been confirmed, raising concerns that the pandemic would soon overwhelm the continent\u2019s under-resourced health services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, March 25, Nigeria had a short break from new confirmed cases of coronavirus until almost midnight before five more patients tested positive.
