{"id":7919,"date":"2020-03-31T14:21:18","date_gmt":"2020-03-31T14:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=7919"},"modified":"2020-03-31T14:21:23","modified_gmt":"2020-03-31T14:21:23","slug":"covid-19-not-all-hand-sanitisers-can-kill-virus-pharmacist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=7919","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19: Not all hand sanitisers can kill virus \u2014 Pharmacist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenationonlineng.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-5.jpg\" alt=\"Nigeria records five new cases of coronavirus\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A pharmacist, Mr Ayobambo Fajuyitan, on Tuesday cautioned Nigerians against using hand sanitisers with low alcohol content in preventing COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot all hand sanitisers in the market are capable of killing the COVID-19 virus because the alcohol contents are low,\u2019\u2019 the pharmacist told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone in Ibadan on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, hand sanitiser capable of killing the virus must have 40 per cent alcohol content.<ins><\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen at home, it\u2019s preferred you use hand washing method: It\u2019s better to use the hand wash in a running tap for 20 seconds when at home,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fajuyitan, however, cautioned against ingesting of hand sanitiser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHand sanitisers contain majorly glycerine and ethanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c Hand sanitiser contains 62 per cent ethyl alcohol and that\u2019s the equivalent of four shots of vodka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt that concentration, even a small dose can be dangerous if ingested,\u2019\u2019 Fajuyitan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, the ingestion can lead to dizziness, slurred speech, headaches and even brain damage or death in extreme cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlso ocular irritation, vomiting, conjunctivitis, oral irritation, cough and abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRare effects included coma, seizure, hypoglycemia metabolic acidosis and respiratory depression may occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMajority of the hand sanitisers produced in Nigeria don\u2019t even have up to 62 per cent ethyl alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you eat with your hands after using hand sanitiser, be cautious as excessive use of sanitiser can make you prone to viral infections as removal of bacteria give ample space for the virus to grow and sanitisers are not capable of denaturing viruses,\u2019\u2019 he said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pharmacist, Mr Ayobambo Fajuyitan, on Tuesday cautioned Nigerians against using hand sanitisers with low alcohol content in preventing COVID-19. \u201cNot all hand sanitisers in the market are capable of killing the COVID-19 virus because the alcohol contents are low,\u2019\u2019 the pharmacist told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone in Ibadan on Tuesday.
