Department of State Services (DSS) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have impounded 1,207 bags of 50kg foreign rice in residential apartments of Adamawa State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team also confiscated 83 bags of sugar and other commodities in a bid to fight economic saboteurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, told newsmen yesterday in Yola that the apex bank partnered the DSS to save its Anchor Borrowers Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said, \u201cThe move became necessary due to the economic threat caused by rice smuggling into the country, at a time government was stimulating the growth of local content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Represented by the CBN Branch Controller in Yola, Jatau Sato, the governor lamented that smugglers were frustrating the bank\u2019s drive for diversification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor a long time, the CBN has been complementing the effort of the Federal Government is trying to diversify the economy through agriculture, which we have identified as a major advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRecently, the CBN introduced the Anchor Borrowers Programme and we know the success story in Kebbi State. Also in Adamawa here, we have recorded great success, but we have been encountering challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRecently we have stepped up from the primary level of production to the secondary level, that is why we have the Anchor Borrowers Programme, which ensures a complete value chain in the agricultural business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, some individuals who believe in pecuniary interests are frustrating the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are smuggling foreign rice into our economy, thereby threatening our own farmers and the economy. Therefore, what we have been able to do is to partner the DSS. With this new partnership, the DSS discovered that these smugglers have circumvented the conventional way of warehousing, by hiring residential buildings to store foreign rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo they raided the area and discovered that a lot of these products were stockpiled in these houses,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the DSS has obtained court order to distribute the seized item to vulnerable groups in the zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jatau hinted that the DSS was, therefore, set to commence the distribution of the impounded items to the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, orphanages, organised almajiri houses and religious organisation that have organised IDP camps.
