{"id":944,"date":"2019-11-08T03:23:57","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T03:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=944"},"modified":"2019-11-08T03:24:07","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T03:24:07","slug":"dss-confirms-receipt-of-court-order-to-release-sowore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/?p=944","title":{"rendered":"DSS CONFIRMS RECEIPT OF COURT; ORDER TO RELEASE SOWORE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"888\" src=\"http:\/\/watchdogplusmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SOWORE-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-935\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For\nthe second time in about one month on Thursday, the Department of State\nServices failed to obey a court order directing the release of pro-democracy\nactivist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.<br>\n<br>\nThe\nagency, which was on Thursday morning served with the latest ruling of a\nFederal High Court, Abuja, by the court\u2019s bailiff and lawyers to Sowore,\nacknowledged receipt of the document but refused to obey the directive.<br>\n<br>\nAs at the\ntime of filing this report, there was no indication that the agency was ready\nto honor the court order and release Sowore and Olawale Bakare widely known as\nMandate, who had been detained in their custody since August 3 and 5, 2019\nrespectively.<br>\n<br>\nIn a\nprecursor to Thursday\u2019s refusal to honor the order issued by Justice Ijeoma\nOjukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, the DSS turned back the court\u2019s\nbailiff and Sowore\u2019s lawyers on Wednesday at around 4:30pm, claiming that the\nagency could not attend to the document because they had closed since 3:30pm.<br>\n<br>\nThe team\nwas asked to return to the facility at 10:00am on Thursday to serve the court\norder.<br>\n<br>\nHowever,\nseveral hours since acknowledging receipt of the fresh order to release the two\nmen, the DSS is refusing to do so despite the defendants perfecting their bail\nconditions. <br>\n<br>\nCourt\norder submitted to the DSS<br>\n<br>\nRecall\nthat the DSS also flouted an order issued by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the same\ncourt directing it to release Sowore after he met an initial bail condition set.\n<br>\n<br>\nIn his\nruling on September 30, Justice Taiwo had asked Sowore to deposit his\ninternational passport with the court as condition for his release by the\nsecret police while setting a date for the commencement of trail on the charges\nbrought against him by the DSS. <br>\n<br>\nBut\ndespite meeting that mandate the next day, the secret police refused to release\nSowore, instead filing charges of money laundering and cyberstalking President\nMuhammadu Buhari against him \u2013 a development that has continued to attract condemnation\nfrom around the world.<br>\n<br>\nSowore was\narrested in Lagos in the early hours of August 3, 2019 by the DSS for calling\non Nigerians to take to the streets in peaceful demonstrations to demand for a\nbetter country from the President Buhari-led administration.<br>\n<br>\nThe\ngovernment views his action as capable of bringing the regime down and has\nadopted desperate measures to keep him out of circulation for daring to speak\ntruth to power.<br>\n<br>\nIn recent\ntimes, the DSS has earned a notorious reputation for flouting court orders by\ncontinuing to hold on to all those perceived to staunch critics of President\nBuhari\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the second time in about one month on Thursday, the Department of State Services failed to obey a court order directing the release of pro-democracy activist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.
