The presidency has tackled Nigeria’s opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over their comments on President Muhammadu Buhari’s nationwide address on Monday, April 13. It would be recalled that the PDP faulted Buhari’s speech on coronavirus, noting that the president failed to address important issues of urgent concerns to Nigerians. However, reacting on Wednesday, April 15, the presidency said something much is wrong if the opposition party dismissed the national broadcast which the European Union, described as ‘‘a very powerful address to the nation” as disappointing. The presidency said every single decision taken in the interest of national security by the Buhari administration has been opposed by PDP. Buhari’s speech failed to address important issues of urgent concerns to Nigerians – PDP reacts The reaction was contained in a statement by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu. “Something must definitely be wrong with Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) if they would-as they did yesterday- dismiss the important national broadcast by President Muhammadu Buhari as “disappointing,” a speech for which the European Union, through their Ambassador to Nigeria, congratulated the President, describing it as ‘‘a very powerful address to the nation last night,” part of the statement reads. The presidential spokesman also tackled the country’s main opposition party saying they have a choice to reconnect with the people by joining this coalition and stop the unnecessary distractions. He also added that the party should recognize the efforts of the Buhari-led administration and if there is nothing important to say they should simply close their mouth as Nigeria is more important than politics. He said: “The PDP should make the choice of reconnecting with the people by joining this coalition and stopping the unnecessary distractions; recognizing the efforts of the people led by the government or simply shut their mouth if they have nothing important to say. The nation is more important than politics.” It had been previously reported that the PDP reacted to President Buhari’s nationwide broadcast concerning the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday, April 13. The party in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, the national publicity secretary, described the speech as very disappointing. Ologbondiyan explained that the speech just like the previous broadcast of Sunday, March 29, failed to address important issues of urgent concerns to Nigerians as they struggle daily against the spread of the disease. In other news, President Buhari has extended the lockdown in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun states for another two weeks. This was contained in the president’s address to the nation on Monday, April 13.
